Located in scenic Dutch Country, in southeastern Pennsylvania, Lancaster is the main town of the Amish population. Home to a number of traditional Amish communities, Lancaster city center follows a basic grid-pattern layout, modeled on Philadelphia's set-up.

Historic Penn Square is situated at the heart of the city, and all around Lancaster is farmland, rolling hills and breathtaking scenery.

Historic Downtown District

Historic Downtown Lancaster is loaded with museums and churches, and also contains a delightful collection of boutiques and unique specialist stores. The main attractions here are Central Market, Demuth Museum and the buildings, while art galleries and performing arts can also be enjoyed in Historic Downtown Lancaster. Guided tours of the downtown district run daily between April and October.


Penn Square

Located in the center of Lancaster, Penn Square is the true heart of the city, with its numerous shops and restaurants. This historic area is ideal for strolling around day or night, while the profusion of bars ensures a good choice if you are out for the night. One of the most prominent icons in the square is Lancaster's Soldiers and Sailors Monument, located in the middle of the square. Attractions close to Penn Square include America's oldest theater in continuous operation, the Fulton Opera House, which has seen some big name performers, while Lancaster's Central Market is also situated nearby.

Central Market

This centuries-old market in downtown Lancaster is one of the oldest of its kind in the United States. The redbrick building that houses the market has been here since 1889, making it one of America's oldest covered markets. Lancaster's Central Market is a popular icon for the Amish, as well as visitors to Lancaster, and sells quality arts and crafts, and fresh produce from local Amish farms.

Eastern Lancaster District

The eastern end of Lancaster has many attractions and although not quite as authentic as the genuine Amish way of life, it is nevertheless a fun area and great for kids. Attractions include the likes of Dutch Wonderland and Running Pump Mini-Golf, while fast-food joints and nifty stores are also in abundance.
